When it comes to air conditioning, people in different countries use different terminology for the same things. In Australia they don’t use the term heat pump. They are more likely to talk about Split Systems or Reverse Cycle Aircon.
Cool Air are specialists in refrigeration, heat pumps and air conditioning in Timaru, and we get asked this question on a regular basis.
Heat Pumps vs Air Conditioning
So, what is the difference between heat pumps and air conditioning in New Zealand?
There is generally no technical difference between heat pumps and air conditioning in NZ. When aircon is installed in a home it is called a heat pump. When it is installed in a business or office it is called air conditioning. Sometimes in Commerical settings we use the term HVAC, which stands for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
How does it work?
Both units use a split system with a unit outside the home, and one inside. The outdoor unit extracts heat energy from outside your home – even on a cold Timaru morning. This heats up the refrigerant within the outside unit which is then transferred to the inside unit.
When the inside unit draws your living room air over the hot coolant, it increases the air temperature. This cycle is repeated until the air in your home get to the temperature you desire.
In summer, the two units switch roles and heat energy is transferred from inside the house to the outside, leaving your room cooler.
Refrigeration
When we use the term refrigeration in Timaru, we are meaning a wide range of fridge and freezers used in commercial or industrial situations.
For example, in 2019 Cool Air completed a significant upgrade to the walk-in Chiller at Liquorland in Dee Street, Timaru. Food and drink refrigeration is a very visible application of commercial refrigeration. Orchard cool stores would a be a less visible but highly important use for refrigeration.
