As commercial refrigeration specialists who have been in the industry for quite some time now, we want to share some refrigeration maintenance tips that will help improve the life span of your commercial refrigeration equipment.
Clean the inside of your commercial refrigerator/freezer
It’s good practice to include cleaning your refrigeration units as part of your regular cleaning schedule. If and where possible, remove shelves, and items and clean the insides of the units, including the nooks and crannies. Then dry the unit completely to avoid any extra residue.
Clean or replace the gasket
The gasket is the rubber on the doors to your refrigerator which keeps the doors sealed, allowing cool air to stay inside the refrigerator, and warm air to stay out. It is important to clean the gasket, to ensure that it’s allowing the refrigerator to function at full capacity. Include cleaning the gasket on all refrigeration units on your regular maintenance schedule. We recommend for this to be on your monthly maintenance list. Your staff can simply clean the gasket with a cloth and an all-purpose cleaner. If you notice any damage, or tears in the gasket, contact your commercial refrigeration service provider.
Set the right temperate
For your commercial refrigerator to function efficiently, it needs to be set at the right temperature. Set the temperature to anywhere between 0° to 4°C for the refrigerator. Most commercial refrigerators have a built-in digital thermometer. For the freezer, set the temperature to -18°C.
It is recommended that you check the temperature from time to time, to ensure that your food is refrigerating properly and not going bad.
Get your condenser coils cleaned by a technician
Condenser coils are located at the back of your fridge or at the bottom. These coils cool and condense your refrigerator. Over time, these coils tend to build up dirt and dust, which is likely to reduce its effect in losing heat easily, therefor causing overheating. Overheating is likely to impact the working of your refrigerator, which is why it’s important to get the coils cleaned by a technician.
This can be done during a routine maintenance check by a refrigeration specialist.
Schedule maintenance of your commercial refrigeration unit
Commercial refrigerators need regular maintenance to achieve maximum efficiency, therefore reducing electricity costs. Scheduled maintenance will also help prevent unexpected refrigerator breakdowns, which can cause loss of stock and loss of sales.
So, ensure you have a service agreement and regular maintenance scheduled with your refrigeration specialist.
