Cool Air completed a significant upgrade to the walk-in Chiller at Liquorland in Dee Street, Timaru, in 2019, working in with Liquorland to customize their requirements as a design build.
Liquorland needed bigger storage because their current bottle cooler couldn’t hold the product they were wanting to display.

What was the ultimate goal?
Liquorland love helping people. They pride themselves on their ability to provide friendly and knowledgeable service, a great range of products and at a great price to all our customers. So its not surprising that their ultimate goal was for their customers to leave with the coldest beverages in Town!

The existing chiller needed extending which also mean increasing the refrigeration capacity. A pass-through Bottle cooler was installed with windows and display shelving along with a uni-slide automatic door.

The previous walk-in chiller had no way to view the product from the warm interior of the shop. So the chiller was extended, and glass doors and shelving were added.
This had the effect of allowing customers to stand in the warm shop and make a choice on their cold beverage prior to choosing it. This increases sales for the store by making a more enjoyable shop for the customer.

What challenges did you have to overcome?
Condensation
One of the age-old challenges with refrigeration cabinets is how to keep the beer cold and windows clear of mist.
To overcome this, Cool Air installed heating elements around the double glazed pass-through doors to stop any condensation.
Refrigeration in itself is dry and cold so it eliminates moisture.
Pre-loved Cool Room
Another significant challenge was for the team to create an as-new system from a pre-loved cool room. The team had to travel to Christchurch and manually disassemble an existing cool room.
The cool room came from a two year old liquor store in Christchurch which had closed down.
Cool Air’s ability to complete this to a high standard was a significant factor for Liquorland.
Working around customers
As you can imagine, customers don’t stop buying beer just because a new cool room is being installed.
Cool Air owner, Regan Koster, noted that Liquorland were great clients that allowed our team to box on at all hours of the day and night. Because of their flexibility and support Cool Air were able to complete the project in a timely manor, avoiding disruption in the store.

How Did You Measure Success?
The most important measure of success for Cool Air was the satisfaction of the Liquorland team. They were happy that even though the equipment was second-hand, it was professionally disassembled and re-installed like new.
Liquorland’s experience of the cool room is that it operates like a new system.
Hands on success
A key success factor was Koster working onsite during this particular project. He was hands-on with the workmanship and overseeing every aspect of this install. His sheer experience in the industry cannot be overstated.
Industry Knowledge and experience
This project was a tender process and Cool Air were awarded the tender through their rapport with Liquorland.
But perhaps the most significant factor was an awareness of the planning and expert knowledge Koster was able to bring to the quoting process.
After many years of being in this industry, Koster knows what is required to achieve the most practical and efficient result for the client.
This is evident when Cool Air are also awarded much larger projects such as the air conditioning for the overhaul of the Tekapo A Intake Gate.
“Liquorland is a client that Cool Air are very happy to continue supporting!”
